Outdoor museum of Luicciana An idyllic place born from the fusion between contemporary art and the natural environment

The small village of Luicciana, which has just over one hundred inhabitants and is located in the municipality of Cantagallo, has proudly hosted an open-air museum since 1984. This unique museum is made up of installations created by contemporary artists, some of whom are nationally and internationally renowned. The decision to promote a cultural renaissance comes from the desire to create something truly memorable.

The reflection that led to this wonderful reality arose from a rich cultural heritage, which stimulated an interest in contemporary languages and their interactions with art. It is important to underline that this ancient village has experienced different historical phases: in the fourteenth century it was a Podesteria, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it hosted a flourishing market and finally it was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, as it was located on the Gothic Line. This dramatic event led to an almost total reconstruction of the village and, in 1983, gave rise to an initiative called "Art in the Landscape", which offered anyone the opportunity to donate and exhibit works of art.

The diffusion of these works of art into the surrounding environment recalls artistic movements such as Poor Art and Land Art, which seek to break down barriers between works of art and traditional spaces such as galleries and museums. In this context, the Luicciana Open Air Museum gathers many of the protagonists of the Florentine artistic avant-garde of the 60s and 70s, including Vinicio Berti, Silvio Loffredo and Gualtiero Nativi. The museum complex, initially composed of about forty works exhibited in the local headquarters of the Misericordia, has enlarged thanks to the contribution of contemporary artists such as Frank Burattin, Toni Fertonani, Berti, Leonetto Tintori and Salvatore Cipolla, ranging well beyond the physical boundaries of the headquarters museum. The streets and squares of Luicciana host frescoes, ceramic and iron installations, sculptures and multi-material objects, offering a wide variety of artistic techniques.

This extraordinary example demonstrates how art can live in symbiosis with the surrounding environment, creating a fusion between art itself and everyday life. This idyllic place also attracts young contemporary artists who find inspiration and work opportunities in this unique context.
