Vernio Zuccherini
Zuccherini from Vernio are dry biscuits that boast a fascinating history. Originating from Vernio ,they are also traditional throughout the Bisenzio Valley which also includes the municipalities of Vaiano and Cantagallo .
Their production dates back to several centuries ago, when the women of the town began preparing these delicacies to celebrate special events such as weddings, communions and confirmations. Zuccherini were offered as a symbol of good luck and sweet wishes to the guests and friends who took part in the celebrations.
Their artisanal workmanship, handed down from generation to generation, is characterized by particular care in the choice of ingredients and their combination. Zuccherini are prepared with anise, which gives them their distinctive, aromatic flavour, and are then covered with a layer of iced sugar.
The ring shape of Zuccherini is another element that makes them unique. In fact, it recalls a wedding ring, a symbol of love and union. Sometimes they were also made in different shapes, such as that of an hourglass, and decorated with small sugared almonds, adding a touch of joy and colour.
Today, Zuccherini from Vernio are still produced following ancient traditions, keeping their charm and authentic taste intact. They have become an important specialty of the area, attracting visitors and dessert enthusiasts from all over, eager to savor a piece of Tuscan culinary history.
