Municipal Gallery Discover masterpieces and frescoes that tell the artistic history of Prato
Inside the magificent Town Hall of Prato, lies the precious Gallery, ready to welcome you as soon as you cross the threshold. On the ground floor, you will be fascinated by the amazing "Bacchino" by Ferdinando Tacca, placed here to preserve its beauty. Decorating the fountain in Piazza del Comune, you will find a twentieth-century copy of this superb sculpture.
But it is on the first floor that the true essence of the Gallery comes to life. Along the different rooms, you will be able to admire a rich collection of portraits of illustrious nineteenth-century figures, masterfully executed by various Prato artists, as well as works from the early twentieth century. One of the most fascinating places is undoubtedly the Council Hall, where two frescoes from the early fifteenth century catch the eye: a Majesty among saints and a Militant Justice. On the plastered walls, there are collections of paintings depicting Illustrious Men and Benefactors, from Francesco di Marco Datini to Ferdinando Stefano di Lorena, passing through the portraits of the Medici grand dukes. To further embellish this room, with its octagonal lacunar ceiling, a nineteenth-century neo-mannerist frieze executed by Pezzati.
Recently, a new exhibition itinerary was set up to make the collection even more accessible to the public. Paintings and sculptures, which until today were kept in storage, have been rediscovered and brought to light, enriching the rooms of the city palace with pieces of enormous value.
Come and discover the beautiful Town Hall and its Gallery which celebrates the exceptional artistic heritage of Prato.
